The first annual Northern Virginia Birth Services and Northern Virginia Business Directory Diaper Drive is happening at the NVBS Studio on October 3, 2015, starting at 10:00 AM!
Did you know that a survey conducted in 2011 states that 36% of all 3 year olds living in Virginia are at or below the poverty line? Many of these families rely on federal programs to provide Food Stamps, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). However, these programs do not supply diapers and diaper wipes.
Nationwide, the numbers are just as concerning:
• 5.3 million Children in the U.S. aged three or younger live in poor or low-income families. • 1 in 3 American families’ report experiencing a diaper need. • Diapers cannot be obtained with food stamps. • Disposable diapers cost $70 to $80 per month per baby. • No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers. • Without transportation, buying diapers at a convenience store rather than a large “big box” store can significantly increase the monthly cost of diapers. • Infants require up to 12 diapers per day, toddlers about 8.
Diapers are a daily necessity and without them or the ability to buy them, people often resort to unhealthy lifestyle choices. They cut back on meals and/or leave the child in a dirty diaper for longer periods of time. In an effort to aide these families, local organizations such as Northern Virginia Diaper Bank and Serve a Village have been providing a reliable source of diapers and wipes to Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, however the need continues to grow.
How can we help?
September 28th-October 4th is National Diaper Need Awareness Week. In an effort to raise awareness of the need Northern Virginia Birth Services (NVBS) and Northern Virginia Business Directory (NVBD) are holding a Diaper Drive to begin Saturday, October 3rd and run 3 weeks ending Monday, October 19th with a “Kickoff” vendor style event on October 3rd at Northern Virginia Birth Services.
The goal: Raise 5000 diapers by October 19th, 2015.
Northern Virginia Business Directory is a local digital business network dedicated to helping one another grow their business.
Northern Virginia Birth Services provides Labor Doula support, Postpartum Care, Placenta Encapsulation, and Childbirth Education.
Vendors from Northern Virginia Business Directory will be on hand.
